Lyrics
Swimming on the beach one day
The current always went my way
But that day I swam too far and so
Got tugged away by the undertow.
The wind tossed the water too and fro
And then I saw the horizon grow.
Witnessed the wave before me crest
Did not believe I would pass this test.
And as the wave around me crashed
I knew that breath could be my last
But then the wave did pass me by
Looked up and I still saw the sky.
And still the open ocean’s breath
Reminds me of my second chance.
I saw how fate’s foreboding frown
Could cause a shallow man to drown.
I eventually got back to shore
Without the swimming suit I’d worn.
I stood there before the souls I adore
Whom I’d all too often ignored.
A bottle washed up on the shore
Something else I’d normally ignore.
Looked inside was I surprised to see
That it was completely empty?
So I took a pen and wrote a note
Threw it in and watched it float
And hoped someday that it’d be seen
By someone who could learn from me.
And still the open ocean’s breadth
Reminds me of my second chance.
I saw how fate’s foreboding foil
Could get a privileged man to toil.
And still the open ocean’s breath
Reminds me of my second chance.
I saw the water’s unwitting whim
Convince a humbled man to swim again.
